“A competition is being launched to give Britain’s controversial electricity pylons a makeover for the first time since their original design was chosen in the 1920s.
The Royal Institute of British Architects (Riba) is running the contest for the Department of Energy and Climate Change, along with National Grid.
Electricity pylons have stood tall across the UK since 1927 stretching out across every kind of landscape.
Their presence in some parts of the countryside has caused controversy because of their effect on the appearance of beautiful and remote spots.
But with the Government putting renewable energies at the heart of its strategy to cut emissions, huge investment and new infrastructure is required - meaning the design of pylons is up for a rethink.” source: Sky News
